Flora

The plant life of Biokovo is extremely interesting and rich. The native flora is quite diverse. From the oldest Mediterranean plants to the more recent boreal and Central European plant life. The prevalent plants are of the Illyrian and Mediterranean variety, with a significant decrease in the number of alpine plants. Therefore, in terms of botanical geography, Biokovo falls under the Balkan-Apennine province and exhibits characteristics of the Balkan flora (according to Kušan, 1969).
The plant life of Biokovo has been significantly degraded. “Plant population” or “plant life” are terms that usually include two components - flora and vegetation. Vegetation is the sum of all plant communities or phytocenoses. These communities evolved in line with existing environmental factors and are reliable indicators of habitat conditions.
Flora is the sum of all plant species growing in a certain area. It is a well-known fact that plants are the foundation of biodiversity. As natural habitats and sources of food for both animals and humans, it can truly be said that there is no life without plants, which is why it is important to learn more about them in order to protect and preserve them.
