Kalalarga
Kalalarga, also known as the "Wide Street," is the oldest and most important street in the historic center of Makarska. Located near the main city square, Kalalarga has been the hub of social and economic life for centuries. Its stone-paved path and authentic Dalmatian architecture testify to the city's rich past. Traces of Baroque architecture are still visible in Kalalarga and around Kačić Square—recognizable by ornate stone coats of arms, elegant balconies, decorated windows, and monumental entrance doors.
Although some parts of the street have changed in appearance over time, the basic layout of the main square and the arrangement of surrounding streets have remained unchanged to this day. Kalalarga was not only a commercial and traffic hub but also a gathering place, a venue for celebrations, and a setting for important city events. Generations of Makarska’s residents met, traded, and celebrated here, making this street a symbol of community and urban identity. Today, Kalalarga retains its authentic charm, attracting visitors with its historic spirit, stone façades, and old Mediterranean atmosphere. A walk along this street offers a chance to discover Makarska’s rich heritage and experience its unique historical ambiance.
