ST. MARK'S CHURCH
Situated on the elevated northern part of the central city square, the Cathedral of St. Mark proudly rises—an impressive late Baroque church dominating the entire area. A wide staircase leads to it, and in front of the church stretches a spacious courtyard, creating a magnificent impression upon arrival. This notable building was once the cathedral of the Diocese of Makarska and today belongs to the Archdiocese of Split-Makarska. It is dedicated to St. Mark the Evangelist and represents a symbol of the religious and cultural revival of the Makarska Diocese.
The construction of the Cathedral of St. Mark took place in multiple stages between 1700 and 1766. During this period, several builders worked on its construction, with the final appearance of the church being shaped by Bartol Riviera, a Venetian military captain and engineer. The Cathedral of St. Mark is an unmissable landmark for all visitors to Makarska, whether they come for historical, cultural, or religious reasons. Its interior houses a rich artistic heritage, while the exterior offers a spectacular view. A visit to this unique place provides insight into the rich history and tradition of Makarska, as well as moments of peace and spiritual inspiration.
