VENETIAN FOUNTAIN
On Kačić Square, there is also the Venetian Fountain, one of the oldest monuments in the city. This fountain, erected in the 18th century during the rule of the Venetians, bears witness to Makarska’s long and rich history. It was built by Ioseppo Bisazzio and is notable for the coat of arms engraved on its right side, which is still used today as the official emblem of the city of Makarska. Made of stone with an engraved inscription and the coat of arms of the Venetian Republic, the fountain once served as the main source of drinking water for the city’s inhabitants.
Today, the Venetian Fountain is an unmissable attraction for visitors, and its authentic beauty further enriches the historic ambiance of Kačić Square. Alongside the monument to Andrija Kačić Miošić, the fountain serves as a reminder of Makarska’s layered past, shaped over centuries by various cultures and civilizations. Preserved throughout the years, the fountain embodies a fusion of art, architecture, and history, testifying to the importance of the Venetian Republic in the city’s development.
