MONUMENT TO THE SWIMMER

The "Bonaca" monument is one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. This artistic installation was unveiled in 2006 to mark the 100th anniversary of tourism in Makarska and has since attracted the attention of both local and international visitors. The sculpture depicts a bather in the moment of complete surrender to the sea – lying on the water's surface with the head, part of the torso, and toes above the surface.

In addition to its artistic value, the "Bonaca" monument carries a strong symbolism. It represents the spirit of the Mediterranean, the beauty of life by the sea, and the relaxed lifestyle that characterizes Makarska. It’s not uncommon to see passersby posing next to the sculpture or admiring its details, making it an unmissable attraction in the city. The "Bonaca" monument is not only a work of art but also a reminder of the long-standing tourism tradition in this beautiful coastal city.
