MONUMENT TO THE REVOLUTION & OBSERVATORY
Located in the heart of Makarska, on an elevated natural plateau just fifty meters from the city’s waterfront and beach, is a unique site that combines history and astronomy – the Monument to the Revolution and the Makarska Observatory. This impressive monument, erected in 1974, honors all the fallen defenders of Makarska and the Makarska Riviera during World War II. It was designed by the prominent architect Matija Salaj, one of the pioneers of tourist architecture on the Croatian coast.
What makes this location even more special is the fact that the youngest observatory in Croatia is located directly on the monument. The Makarska Observatory and Astro Park offer a unique scientific, educational, and tourist experience that attracts both domestic and international visitors. The observatory is maintained by volunteers from the Orion association, who organize various programs, educational activities, and astronomy schools, especially for children and young people.

During the summer, tourists have the opportunity to peer into the secrets of the universe through telescopes and experience unforgettable astronomical nights. One of the most important events held here is the Days of the Universe – the only scientific event under Biokovo, which has been attracting visitors from all over the world for seven years. This event is tied to the spectacular meteor shower of the Perseids, known as the "Tears of St. Lawrence," which reaches its peak in mid-August. If you visit Makarska, don't miss the chance to experience the magic of the universe in the unique setting of the Makarska Observatory and feel the historical significance of the Monument to the Revolution – a place where the past and the future, memory and knowledge, the earthly and the celestial intertwine.
